Allan "Al" Gardner Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Allan Gardner.  Al passed away on Wednesday, August 28th after a long battle with cancer.

Al grew up in Toronto and spent his summers in Muskoka at the family cottage, as well as canoe tripping in Algonquin Park in Northern Ontario.  Skiing kept their family busy during the winter.  After graduating from high school Al migrated to Alberta to attend the University of Alberta.  He worked briefly for the Canadian Western Natural Gas Co. before joining NOV – Tuboscope, where he worked for his entire career.

Al loved sports and had a love for the outdoors.  He and his wife Cathy spent many years canoeing, hiking and camping in the summer, and skiing and curling in the winters.  Al also enjoyed playing golf.  Al’s two sons, Cam and Wes, inherited their father’s athletic abilities and passion for sports.  Al took great pride in watching the boys play all kinds of sports including hockey and a lot of lacrosse.

Al leaves behind his wife, Cathy, and their sons, Cameron (Melissa Gabel) and Wesley.  He is also survived by his brothers, Cam (Judy) of Georgian Bay ON/Vancouver BC, and Ian (Sam) of Burlington ON; stepbrother Brian McCall (Jane) London, ON; stepsister Marnie Edwards (Ken) of Kingston ON; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Archie Gardner; his mother, Marnie McCall; and stepfather, Al McCall.

A celebration of life will be held next spring with family in Toronto where Al will be laid to rest.

Heartfelt thanks for the dedicated care by Dr. Jose Monzon and all the wonderful staff that touched Al’s life while he spent so many years in and out of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Foothills Hospital.   Special thanks to the kind and caring staff of Unit 71 at the Rockyview Hospital where Al spent his final days. In loving memory of Al Gardner, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.  If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society (www.cancer.ca).
