Joseph (Joe) Serediuk Obituary

It is with immense sadness to announce the passing of Joe Serediuk with his wife by his side at the incredible age of 95 years +5 days on Friday, March 8, 2024.

Joe was the perpetual pillar of strength and tenacity that helped him achieve this milestone. There wasn’t a day in his life that he wasn’t exercising, riding his bike, walking his dogs, and playing with his children or grandchildren.

Born and raised in Calgary, Joe spent his early years on the family farm in SW Calgary, which is now known as Westhills. From there the family moved to the Hillhurst/Sunnyside area.

Joe was very active in sports, he participated in the Western Canadian amateur wrestling scene where his stage name was ‘Lil Joe’, he even won a belt title. After he moved on from the wrestling arena, he spent time as a trainer for the Calgary Broncs (Colts) Jr. Football team. Always wanting to stay active he continued to volunteer and work at the Calgary YMCA coaching youth in wrestling and working the Tuck Shop and Health Club.

Joe’s careers started with CP Rail, where he apprenticed and received his ticket as a Boiler Maker. One day while coming home from an appointment, he remarked that he did the welding on one of the steam engines that are on display at Heritage Park. Deciding CP wasn’t where he wanted to be he resigned, and the next day got a job with Canada Post where he worked for the next 35 years.

A talented artist and craftsman and never one to sit still he frequently was working on something new. Building picnic tables, painting incredible scenery and animals, making leather belts and purses.

After his retirement he met and married his wife Penny and the two spent 30 years together travelling and visiting with family. Every Friday night was date night when they would go out to dinner.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Penny; his children Stuart Serediuk (Susan Clark-Serediuk), Luana (David) Smith, Jeanine Serediuk (Phil Badry) and Sheila Serediuk (Brad Olive). He will also be missed by his stepchildren Patricia Dawes (Steve) and Joanne Engele (Trevor). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Wasyl and Anna Serediuk and his two brothers, Tommy and Roman (Rummy) Serediuk.

A Celebration of Joe’s Life will be held at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services (5502 – 2nd Street SW) on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.
