Choosing Clothing

CLOTHING FOR THE DECEASED

It is common to use a full set of clothing, including underwear, socks or stockings, and sometime even shoes if so desired.

There are no restrictions to proper clothing to choose for the deceased. Some people prefer a traditional suit or dress, yet others choose a more common or favourite outfit that the deceased use to wear. For the ladies, you may want to bring in her favorite shade of lipstick.

In some circumstances (surgery or illness prior to death, accidental death) it is advised to bring in clothing that may cover any intravenous markings, bruising or swelling. Your funeral director can advise you on the circumstances.

Do not forget eye glasses or dentures, as these may be something that the deceased was recognized wearing. After the service, you have the option of donating the eye glasses to charities that support third world vision. Your funeral director can arrange that for you.

JEWELRY

When placing jewelry in the casket with the deceased, always consider that it may have a possible inheritance to it. You may decide after burial that it could have been an important sentimental item to give to grandchildren. It may be advised to place the jewelry on during visitation and the funeral director can remove it prior to burial. For cremation, most funeral homes are reluctant to cremate jewelry and most prefer to place it in the cremation urn in tact. Ask your funeral director on their policies regarding the cremation of jewelry.

MEMENTOS

Families are encouraged to place items in the casket with the deceased. These items may include, but are not limited to, photographs, drawings, cards or letters, flowers and  religious icons. Although the same applies for cremation, there are some restrictions on items that are electronic or made of glass.
